Quick Trip to San Francisco

Quick, but full of good times! We convinced our friends Mel and Phil to go and that just added to the enjoyment of the whole trip. We actually went to specifically go to Port Chicago. This is where, on the evening of July 17, 1944, residents in the San Francisco east bay area were jolted awake by a massive explosion that cracked windows and lit up the night sky. At Port Chicago Naval Magazine, 320 men were instantly killed when two ships being loaded with ammunition for the Pacific theater troops blew up. It was WWII's worst home front disaster. We’ve been trying to visit this site for quite a while. Since it is on an active military base, it is very hard to get into. Luckily, everything worked out for this visit. We were also able to go to Lazy Bear restaurant which has 2 Michelin stars and where the son, Austin, of Buzz and Sharon Coors works. It was a lovely evening and Austin took very good care of us! Other highlights of the trip included Mission Dolores, Palace of Fine Arts, The Fortune Cookie Factory, The Academy of Science Museum, the DeYoung Museum, another great meal at Ozumo, and the Club Level at our hotel - spoiled!
